Inauguration of BioAsia

The trade show is one of the main forums for the biotechnology sector in Asia-Pacific and Spain is the guest country this year

BioAsia takes place in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, on January 28-29. The Secretary of State for R&D, Carmen Vela, CDTI and the Spain India Council Foundation make up the Spanish institutional delegation, which is accompanied by a vast business delegation formed by several Spanish companies in the industry.

BioAsia 2013 was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Kumar Reddy, and the Secretary of State for R&D, Carmen Vela, who took the chance to announce a new invitation by CDTI and the Department of Biotechnology (Government of India) in 2013 for Spanish and Indian companies to submit joint biotechnology projects. Vela also announced, together with the DBT representative, Dr. George John, the winning projects from the previous edition. Dr. John recognised the importance of Spain as a world leader in the biotechnology sector. Our country is the 9th world power in the field even though the Spanish biotechnology sector is barely 15 years old.

The participation of Spain in BioAsia serves to showcase our country’s innovations in technology and R&D. It also gives continuity to institutional agreements and business partnerships in the field of science and technology in place since the Spain-India Technology Summit. The Summit took place in Delhi in November 2011, and Spain’s participation in the event as a ‘Partner Country’ was co-organised by CDTI and the Spain India Council Foundation.

The Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation, Carmen Vela, used her speech at the inauguration to thank the Spain India Council Foundation for participating in BioAsia 2013 and for the continued support it offers to Spanish institutional events in India in the field of science and technology. After the inauguration, a meeting took place between the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and the Spanish Secretary of State.
